Did you know that Barcelona has more than 50 markets? If you visited Barcelona you may already have seen the Boquería Market, the biggest market in town. But Barcelona has many more markets, and some of them are very interesting, some only sell flowers

The Boquería Market

The Boquería Market is one of the best markets in Barcelona, not to say in Europe. The sight of endless rows of fruit, vegetables, fresh fish, meat, food stalls, cafeterias, bakeries and even small restaurants packed with people surprise most visiters coming to Barcelona's most famous market, the Boquería Market (also called Mercat Sant Josep) on the Ramblas.

Boquería has been at the same place since 1217! Originally the Boquería Market used to sell only meet (goats as the name indicates, Boc means goat in Catalan). However, construction on the modern market that people can visit today began in 1840 and is designed by the architect Mas Vilà. The structure uses wrought iron, a new material of that period. The inauguration was made in 1853.

Mercat Sant Antoni

Ronda de Sant Pau (close to c/del Comte).
Another one of Barcelona's big markets. Close the the Raval-area a popular market. However, the market has been under construction for the last few years.
Opening hours: Monday to Saturday - 08:00 to 14:30 and 17:30 to 20:00

Mercat de Santa Caterina

This food market is situated close to the Cathedral of Barcelona. It is one of the oldest markets in Barcelona but was completely rennovated in 2005 by Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue from EMBT. Locateted close to the Parc de Ciutadella.
Opening hours: Monday to Friday: 08:00 to 14:30 and 17:00 to 19:30
Saturdays: 08:00 to 14:30

Mercat Concepcio

c/Arago in the Eixample area
Goes back to 1888 and has an impressive iron structure to protect the market and its visitors from the rain.
Opening hours: Monday to Friday: 08:00 to 15:00 and 17:00 to 20:00
