Pictures from The Gothic Quarter - Barcelona's medieval quarter

In The Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic in catalan, Barrio Gótico in Spanish) of Barcelona you will find an impressive heritage from the gothic period: churches, palaces, city walls mingle with a few modern buildings.

Among the main buildings are Santa María del Mar (1329-1383). The church was built in just 54 in a period where many inhabitants were killed by the plague. The church is held by just 16 columns, an extraordinary low number for the period. The church is decribed in the novel Cathedral of the Sea by the local author Ildefonso Falcones.
