Wine Tour in Penedès

The Penedès district that begins just 30 minutes drive west of Barcelona is an excellent wine district. Some of Spain's most important companies are to be found here. Between these companies is the world famous wine producer Torres and Freixenet, one of the first companies to produce cava, the local champagne, in Spain. Freixenet is now the 9th biggest wine company in the world.

Both Berberà de la Conca and Penedès are excellent wine districts. Allready the romans discovered this and exported wine from Catalonia to Rome using the port of Barcelona.

After beeing hit by a plague of lise ("the filoxera plague") in the 1880'ies several wineries started importing new grapes and went into the production of cava. And so began what is today the multinational companies Freixenet and Codorniu.

Most of these cava producers are located at the village of Sant Sadurní de Anoia. The village counts only 13.000 inhabitants - but it has more than 100 companies producing cava (the local chanpagne), two of them being the companies Freixenet and Codorniu.
